The Small Club with the Big Heart
Hanmer Springs Ski Area is a friendly, fun ski area just 17km from the alpine resort town of Hanmer Springs. From the top of the field there are great views of the surrounding mountains of St James and Molesworth Stations and the distant peaks of the Nelson Lakes National Park.
There are a variety of groomed runs and off piste to choose from for all ages and stages of skill. Slopes can be viewed from the lounge in the Day Lodge so spectators don’t miss out and the beginner’s area is right beside it with excellent open terrain for kids. The ski area is ideal for the family or group of friends for a weekend away with fun filled runs for everyone. There are three lifts - a Poma, a Rope Tow and the learners area has a Fixed Grip Tow. If you have never used a nutcracker before, Hanmer Springs is a good place to start !
New Zealand Club Fields offer a truly unique grass roots, pared back, low key snow experience in huge contrast to the larger resorts of today.
It's our belief that a day on the snow is about who you're with, where you are and not how hot your gear is!
The car park is at the base of the huts and it’s just a short walk to the tows. There are no queues so you can get in as many runs as your body can handle and the tows operate until you want to stop! The cosy mountain accommodation is backpacker style and is self catering, so don’t forget to bring supplies.
To top off a perfect day or weekend in the mountains a soak in the Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools will ease the strain on the muscles. The village also has some great Restaurants and Bars, and even a nightclub for those with stamina!

The road out of Hanmer to the access road is clearly marked as Clarence Valley Road (this is also known as Jacks Pass) and signed to Hanmer Springs Ski Area. The turn off from Clarence Valley road to the ski area is at St James Station, about ten kilometres out of town. The access road is a short undulating gravel road with a few tight corners. It is north facing, so any ice left on it tends to melt when the sun shines. Car parks are located just below the Lodges.
Camper vans are not permitted, but two wheel drive cars with chains fitted normally have no problem, and four wheel drives can often get up without chains, especially later in the season. Chains must be carried at all times and fitted if signposts advise.
A shuttle runs daily from Hanmer Springs township at 8:15am & 9:15am (11:15am by demand only). Departing mountain 4pm & 5pm (dependent on demand). Hanmer Adventure Centre provide a very good seven day service & comes highly recommended.
